Have you ever found yourself spending 10 minutes in your cabinets or drawers, pulling excess items out in an attempt to find the one useful item you need at that precise moment? Is your closet overflowing with clothes that you keep neglecting to wear? Do you look around your office, recording studio, bedroom, living room and think, Wow, I have a lot of stuff?

For most people, it’s not a space issue, it’s a stuff problem.

We’ve all heard the term, Spring Cleaning. Which, usually requires an entire weekend of going through tons of items and making decisions on what to discard and what to keep – and typically ends up with leftovers thrown in a closet to deal with next weekend, the weekend after that, then forgotten until the following year. Who wants to, or has time to, do that?!

What if there was an easier way to declutter your life?

I’m not suggesting to go full Marie Kondo or adopt a minimalist lifestyle overnight. I’m simply stating slow shifts are more sustainable than radical change. Once you start decluttering the world around you, you’ll feel the fresh and creative energy flow again throughout your life!

Let’s get right to the main points.

WHY

  • Saves time in finding things to give you more time to work on your music
  • Gets rid of clutter that doesn’t add value to your life
  • You’ll have less impulse buying (even with on-sale items)
  • You’ll save money by spending less money on ‘stuff’ you don’t really need
  • Less chaos around you
  • Fewer distractions help you focus on your music and business
  • More room for gifts and other meaningful items that add value
  • Decluttering your space is good for your mindset

The more you’re able to view the details of your life without the distraction of clutter, the more clearly you’ll be able to see the path you’re meant to be on.

CRITERIA

  • Does it serve a purpose?
  • Does it have ‘real’ sentimental value?
  • Do you love it?
  • Do you need it?
  • Do you want it?
  • Does it represent your current identity or lifestyle?
  • Do you have two, three, four or more of the same item? I’m looking at you, coffee cups, Tupperware, USB cables, mini-to-rca cables.

TIPS

  • If you’re unsure about particular items, put them in a box. If you don’t find yourself missing or needing them after 2 months, toss them out.
  • Ziplocks are your friend. Group items for utility purposes (put all your rubber bands, tacks, pins, paper clips, glue, et.al. in one ziplock bag)
  • Odd number of dishes and/or glasses. You’ll notice having an even number of flatware or glassware items is easier to store.
  • You don’t need 8 wine glasses unless you regularly host parties. Otherwise, think of the number of times and the number of visitors you regularly have. For most of us, 2-4 wine glasses will suffice.

Follow the rule of quality over quantity.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR DISCARDED ITEMS

  • Throw them in the trash
  • Donate clothing or household items
  • Let your friends know you’re getting rid of stuff, you never know what they may find useful
  • Neatly put them near the street in a box labeled “Free stuff”. This is a common sight in my neighborhood
  • Round up your friends and organize a coat/clothing drive
  • Musical instruments? How about giving them to your local school or asking a friend if their children would like it?
  • Sell them in an online marketplace

  • Get rid of 3 items this week!
  • Then one thing every week.

It becomes second nature to regularly evaluate your space. You’ll soon find yourself discarding an item here and there on a weekly basis and soon feel free from clutter.

Unless you’re a hoarder, this should be a simple task which can be carried on throughout the year — and the rest of your life.
